Our dentists begin by using a computer-aided design (CAD) to capture digital images of your teeth and jaw. We then design a dental crown and create that crown for installation — all right here in the clinic!
With a same-day procedure, you can skip the temporary tooth crown step. You may even be able to head back to work while you’re waiting, depending on your specific situation.
While dental crowns and Dental Bridges have many similarities, they are not the same. Crowns are used to entirely cover or ‘cap’ a damaged tooth or teeth. This is often referred to as either a ‘tooth cap’ or ‘dental cap’. In addition to strengthening a tooth, dental crowns may be used to enhance its shape, alignment, or appearance.
In contrast,
Dental Bridges are most commonly used to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Dental bridges span the space where teeth are missing. They are then cemented to your natural teeth or your dental implants that surround this space.
A dental implant’s structure incorporates a crown. This is the reason that many people think of tooth crowns and dental implants as interchangeable.
Dental Implants
replace your entire tooth or teeth. A titanium post replaces the root and a crown fits on top. A metal knob, known as an abutment, connects the two.
At your first appointment, your dentist will assess your suitability for dental crowns. After taking a look at your teeth, we will take some x-rays, scans, and photos of your smile. This is used to create accurate 3D digital images using our innovative software. We will then talk you through the treatment plan, answer any questions you may have, and provide you with a preview of how your smile will look after treatment.
With all of this information, we create a unique treatment plan based on your individual smile and lifestyle. It may be the case that treatment is needed to address any oral health issues before placing the tooth crowns.
Using the digital scan from the photos, the dentist creates the dental crown right there in the office. You may have to wait about 1 to 2 hours until the crown is made. Once the crown is ready, your dentist cements it into place. The entire process usually takes about 2 to 4 hours total.
Once the dental crown has healed, at your final appointment your dentist will ensure that all dental crowns and dental bridges are securely fixed and you have the smile of your dreams!
Just like natural teeth, you should have regular check ups at Garden City Dental to ensure that your dental crowns, as well as your entire oral health, is in the best shape possible.
Dental crowns can range in price depending on the material used in the crown and the size of the tooth. Dental crowns can be made from porcelain, ceramic, or metal, although porcelain tooth crowns are the most popular choice. This is because they look more natural, as they can be colour-matched to your existing teeth. To find out more about our pricing, feel free to contact us on: 4634 0664 to discuss our payment options.
The lifespan of a dental crown can vary between 5 and 15 years. Some dental crowns are sturdier than others, and may last 25 - 30 years.
Just like natural teeth, you need to maintain your dental crowns properly with regular 6-monthly check-up appointments. You also need to brush and floss your teeth daily.
As with most types of dental work, many patients express concern about possible pain and discomfort involved with the procedure. However, the dental crown process is incredibly common and straightforward. This results in minimal discomfort throughout the entire process.
Using our CEREC machine, we can create same day dental crowns. This means that in only one consultation, you can see results. However, treatment times typically vary from patient to patient; some people see results after 2-3 visits if other dental work is required.
In some cases, the answer is yes. If you're insured, there is a good chance your health insurance policy covers your dental crown treatment. Most private health insurance funds cover dental care as part of their General treatment, Extras, or Ancillary section.
